Transcendent God

We worship a God that defies narrow categorization. Due to our human history being dominated by patriarchal cultures, the church has often described God in masculine terms, but there is ample Biblical justification for using feminine terms also. The prophets refer to God with feminine metaphors on many occasions - as an angry mother bear protecting her children, as a nursing mother caring for her young, as a feminine spirit of wisdom. There is even better theological reason to understand God as transcending human conceptions of gender - any God we can conceive of in such limited terms would not be God, but just an idol, another creation of human imagination, and not the creator of the universe. We can correctly say that God’s pronouns are they/them.

There is a repugnant and hateful movement in our nation to eradicate transgender people from our public life. There are new laws in many states forbidding life-saving gender-affirming care for teenagers, and in some cases adults. A few states have gone so far as to require trans people to de-transition. The rhetoric being used to support these abominable laws portrays trans people as dangerous predators, stoking illegitimate fears about sharing bathrooms, or unfair sporting competitions. Swept up in this somehow are drag shows (which are a distinct phenomenon from transgender people) as a target for outrage that includes threats of violence and terrorism. To be clear, none of this fear mongering has any basis in reality. Drag performers and trans people are frequently the victims of assault and other crimes, but rarely the perpetrators. Our kids are in more danger from members of the clergy, than from drag performers or trans people.

Though this hate movement is the farthest thing possible from being a Christian ethic, it seeks cover behind “traditional Christian family values” and as such implicates us in their attempted genocide. This makes it incumbent upon Christians of moral character to stand up and clearly reject transphobia. Trans youth especially are some of the most vulnerable people in our society. In the name of the God whose image contains both male and female, and can be limited by neither, we should stand on their side and refuse to allow them to be crucified.
